Ten North Bay prep basketball teams will be continuing their seasons in the Northern California playoff tournament this week.
The Cardinal Newman girls, winners of the North Bay League Oak division with a perfect 10-0 record, will compete in the second-highest NorCal bracket, Division 1, but received the 16th and final seed for the tournament. The Cardinals will open Tuesday on the road at Clovis, the division’s top seed.
No North Bay teams were selected to play in the top-tier Open division among either boys or girls.
The Justin-Siena girls are seeded No. 11 in Division 2 and start Tuesday at No. 6 Woodcreek.
The Rancho Cotate girls are No. 16 in Division 4 and begin play Tuesday at No. 1 Faith Christian in Yuba City.
The Healdsburg girls, who won the North Coast Section title this past Saturday night, are No. 13 in Division 5 and open Tuesday at No. 4 Escalon.
Sonoma Academy is also in that division and plays the same night at No. 2 John Adams Academy in El Dorado Hills as the No. 15 seed.
The St. Vincent girls, No. 6 in the eight-team Division 6 bracket, play Wednesday at No. 3 Forest Lake Christian in Auburn.
Grace Christian Academy is also in the bracket as the No. 7 seed and plays Wednesday at No. 2 Redding Christian.
On the boys’ side, Rancho Cotate received the No. 2 seed in Division 5 and will host No. 15 Mt. Shasta on Tuesday night in Rohnert Park.
The Cougars could face No. 7 Sonoma Academy in the second round, if the Coyotes get past No. 10 Gridley in their opener.
In Division 6, the St. Vincent boys, also coming off a North Coast Section title, are the second seed and will host No. 7 Biggs in Wednesday’s opener.
The second round in divisions 1 through 5 takes place Thursday, with the regional semifinals set for Saturday.
Teams in Division 6 that open Wednesday night will play their semifinals Saturday.
Regional finals in the higher divisions are set for Tuesday, March 10, with the winners advancing to play a Southern California counterpart on Friday or Saturday, March 13 and 14, for a state title in Sacramento.
Soccer
The Cardinal Newman girls received the third seed in the Division II bracket and will open the tournament at home against sixth-seeded St. Ignatius of San Francisco.
The Cardinals won third place in the North Coast Section’s top-tier Open division with Saturday night’s 2-0 victory over Amador Valley. Newman also won the North Bay League Oak division regular-season title with an undefeated league record of 9-0-1.
Newman will host St. Ignatius at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Santa Rosa.
The Sonoma Academy girls are the fourth seed in Division III and will host fifth-seeded Aptos at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Santa Rosa. The Coyotes won the North Central League I and are coming off their first-ever NCS title in winter soccer with Friday night’s 1-0 double-overtime victory over University-San Francisco.
The Vintage boys will also be competing in the NorCal tournament as the fourth seed in Division II. The Crushers will welcome No. 5 Aptos to Memorial Stadium in Napa for Tuesday night’s first-round contest at 5 p.m.
Vintage, which finished in fourth place in the NCS Open division, went undefeated in the Vine Valley Athletic League with a 12-0 mark to win the league title.
The Northern California finals for each of the tournament’s five divisions will take place Saturday, with the winners advancing to the state finals the following weekend.
