Pedestrian safety in Fresno remains a critical concern, with the city consistently ranking as one of the most dangerous in the country for walkers. In 2025, Fresno was ranked the 7th most dangerous metropolitan area for pedestrians by Smart Growth America, following a decade of rising fatalities.

Recent data indicate that pedestrians account for nearly 50% of all traffic-related deaths in the city. While overall fatalities saw a slight dip in 2024 and 2025, risks remain concentrated on high-speed arterials like Shaw Avenue and Blackstone Avenue. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (https://www.ots.ca.gov/) (OTS), Fresno recently ranked 2nd worst for pedestrian victims under age 15. In response, the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan is targeting the “High Injury Network” with a focus on improving lighting and crosswalk visibility to combat the roughly 75% of fatal incidents that occur after dark.
