A man who plowed his car into a Sacramento County Main Jail sally port Monday night during a police pursuit in downtown Sacramento was captured by officers at the end of the wild chase that also left a pedestrian with mild injuries.
The man, a 34-year-old Rio Linda resident, was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of felony evading of a peace officer while driving a reckless manner and felony vandalism, along with misdemeanor allegations of reckless driving and resisting arrest, according to jail records. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail and will be arraigned Wednesday in Sacramento Superior Court.
The incident began about 8:15 p.m. at Sixth and I streets when officers attempted a traffic stop on a suspected reckless driver, Sacramento police said. The driver failed to stop, and officers initiated a pursuit.
During the chase, a pedestrian ran into the street in an apparent attempt to engage the driver and was struck by the fleeing vehicle, police said. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries.
Officers attempted a PIT maneuver and deployed a spike strip in an effort to stop the driver. The vehicle crashed through the jail’s sally port, the secured entrance to the facility.
The driver fled on foot but was quickly taken into custody and arrested on charges related to the incident, Police Department officials said.
