PHOENIX — The Padres beat the White Sox 4-3 on Tuesday at Camelback Ranch.
Batter’s box: Two veterans the Padres acquired to be part of a platoon at first base and designated hitter did what they are being counted on to do — hit against left-handed pitchers. Miguel Andujar drew a walk and Nick Castellanos doubled in succession in the first inning. The pair then went single-homer in the third inning. It was Castellanos’ first home run of the spring. After Andujar singled in the fifth inning, Castellanos grounded into a double play. All of their plate appearances came against lefties. Andujar is 5-for-17 with a home run this spring. Castellanos is 4-for-16 with two doubles and a homer. … Third baseman Jose Miranda doubled in his first at-bat before finishing 1-for-3. That dropped his spring average to .400 (8-for-20). … Outfielder Carlos Rodriguez, who has spent the past two seasons between Double-A and Triple-A, walked twice. He has reached base eight times in 17 plate appearances this spring.
Balls and strikes: Nick Pivetta, the Padres’ presumptive opening-day starter, allowed four singles in the first inning but held the White Sox to one run thanks in large part to his picking off a runner trying to steal second base. A triple and walk followed in the second inning, but he escaped unscathed when catcher Luis Campusano and second baseman Nick Solak thwarted a double steal attempt with Solak throwing out the runner at home. Miguel Vargas homered in the third inning. In all, Pivetta threw 43 pitches and allowed two runs on six hits and a walk and struck out one in his three innings. … Left-hander Kyle Hart, who is competing for a bullpen spot, navigated two scoreless innings in very different manners. He took just six pitches to get through the fourth inning before walking two batters and committing a balk to start the fifth. Then the lead runner was tagged out at home following a rundown on a groundball, and Hart ended the inning with a strikeout and groundout. … In his first Cactus League appearance, lefty Adrian Morejón allowed a run on two doubles in his one inning. … Jeremiah Estrada allowed his first baserunners of the spring (three innings) before stranding them at second and third base in the seventh inning. … Bradgley Rodriguez, the 22-year-old right-hander who made his MLB debut last season, overcame a lead-off walk to work his fourth scoreless inning of the spring. He has retired 12 of the 14 batters he has faced.
Extra bases: Campusano missed a rare ABS challenge for the Padres, who entered the day as the MLB leaders in challenges while on defense. At 10-for-13 (77%), they now rank second. … Miranda made a nice charging play to field a difficult hop to end the third inning.
On deck: Right-hander Joe Musgrove, who sat out last season after having Tommy John surgery, makes his first stadium start of the spring. He has previously worked only on back fields. Musgrove will face Great Britain’s WBC team, 12:10 p.m. PT Wednesday in Peoria, Ariz.
