Angles 7, Mariners 6 at the Peoria Sports Complex
Notable
The Mariners couldn’t hold a two-run lead in the top of ninth and had two chances to score the tying run in the bottom half of the inning, but failed to come through.
After working a scoreless eighth inning, right-hander Reid Easterly returned for the ninth with a two-run lead, but didn’t record an out. He allowed a leadoff double and then walked the next hitter to put the tying run on base. The Mariners called on minor leaguer Reid Easterly to try and stop the rally. But he gave up a deep double off the center field wall to Yolmer Sánchez that scored both runners, tying the game.
The Angels bunted Sánchez to third and old friend and former Mariners prospect Donovan Walton put them ahead with a single through the right side.
Seattle had a chance in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Carson Taylor doubled to center to put the tying run in scoring position. But Angels right-hander Shaun Anderson pitched around Cole Young, walking him and then got Brock Rodden to pop out in foul territory to end the game.
Bryan Woo made his second start of spring and pitched well. He worked the first two inning scoreless, striking four of the ten batters he faced over 2 1/3 innings pitched. Woo issued a rare leadoff walk to start the third inning and then allowed a single to Bryce Teodosio. He came back to strike out Chris Taylor before being lifted due to pitch limit. His replacement, right-hander Michael Rucker, allowed both runner to score on back-to-back singles from Nick Madrigal and Logan O’Hoppe.
Player(s) of the game
The duo of Patrick Wisdom and Rhylan Thomas accounted for almost all of the Mariners offense in the game. They combined to go 4-for-6, scoring three runs and driving four runs. They each hit solo homers in the second inning. Wisdom added a two-run single to left in the fifth inning.
Quotable
“I think the velocity will come. The mechanics will come. I’m not really as focused on that, but more just where my stuff’s at, locating pitches, getting ahead and doing little things. By starting to do those things earlier and often, then they just kind of bleed into the season.” — Woo
