Behind 11 different scorers, No. 15 Syracuse (3-3, 2-2 ACC) rolled to a 13-3 victory over California (3-4,1-2 ACC) at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night.
The Orange defense was equally stout, limiting the Golden Bears to three goals, the fewest the Orange have allowed in a single game since a 20-2 win over Binghamton in February 2020.
Syracuse’s offense was paced by Mackenzie Rich, notching her first hat trick in a Syracuse uniform. She added an assist to bring her total to four points on the evening, matching a previous career high. Grace McHugh scored her first career goal in the win, while Molly Guzik won five draw controls on top of scoring a goal.
Syracuse struck first when Courtney Maclay broke the ice off an assist from Ashlee Volpe, but California answered to level the score. That would be as close as the Golden Bears would get.
The Orange rattled off 11 unanswered goals from there. The first eight came from eight different players — Emma Muchnick, Rich, Mileena Cotter, Bri Peters, Volpe, Mackenzie Borbi and Gracie Britton — before Rich added two more in the final minutes of the half to send Syracuse into the break with a 10-1 lead.
Guzik and Annie Parker extended the run in the third quarter, pushing the advantage to 12-1 before California finally ended the streak with a minute remaining. Each team added a goal in the fourth, closing out a 13-3 final.
The Orange will be back in action at the JMA Wireless Dome on Friday when they take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. The tilt with the Hokies is set for a 5 p.m. start and will air on ACC Network.
