One bicyclist died and another was injured after the two collided Monday afternoon on a bike path in Davis, police said.
The fatal bike crash was reported about 2:45 p.m. on the bike path near West Covell Boulevard and Catalina Drive, just north of the Davis Senior High School football field.
Officers and firefighters arrived and found the two bicyclists with injuries. One of the bicyclists, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Davis Police Department announced in a news release.
Police said the other bicyclist, a 16-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries and was cooperating with investigators Monday.
Julie Veress, 60, of Davis, was the bicyclist who died after Monday’s crash, the Yolo County Coroner’s Office said on Tuesday. Veress was an employee at Sutter Davis Hospital.
Lt. John Evans, a Davis police spokesperson, confirmed on Tuesday that the teen injured in the crash was riding an e-bike.
The exact circumstances of the fatal bicycle crash remained under investigation, according to the Police Department. Evans said the Police Department did not have any further details to release about the circumstances that led to the crash.
“At this time we don’t have anything further to offer except that we ask everyone to keep themselves as safe as possible when riding their bikes, whether on the road or on bike paths,” Evans said. “Please wear your helmets, reflective clothing at night and when dark, follow the rules of the road and pay attention to what is going on around you.”
Authorities temporarily closed the bike path in the immediate area as authorities investigated the bicycle collision.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of a valued member of our team following a tragic incident in the Davis community,” Sutter Health officials said in a written statement. “She was an important part of our community, and this loss is deeply felt by those who had the privilege of working alongside her. Our thoughts are with her family, loved ones and colleagues during this difficult time.”
