A second suspect in the fatal shooting of a 36-year-old man in a residential area of Long Beach, possibly during an attempted robbery, was behind bars Thursday without bail.

Felipe Ramirez, of Long Beach, was arrested Tuesday and booked on suspicion of murder at the Long Beach City Jail, according to police and jail records.

He is suspected in the shooting that occurred around 1:30 a.m. Oct. 12 in the 200 block of Falcon Avenue, near Second Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department. Officers responding to the shooting found the victim, 36-year-old Thomas Mello of Long Beach, with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Mello died at a hospital, police said.

On Sunday, detectives arrested 25-year-old Jose Garcia-Lineras near the 700 block of Orange Avenue, about seven-tenths of a mile north of the shooting scene. Garcia-Lineras, who was homeless, was also being held without bail.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an attempted robbery that escalated into a deadly confrontation.
