SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) rescued 34 cats and kittens from a Northern California animal shelter on Wednesday.
Due to overcrowding and disease management efforts, the City of Stockton Animal Shelter required support for a number of animals in their care. SDHS responded and took in 14 to the Oceanside campus, 12 to the San Diego campus and eight to their Escondido campus.
Several of the kittens suffer from upper respiratory infections (URI), scabies and are ringworm-positive, according to SDHS.
“By working together for these 34 kittens, we will ensure they receive the specialized care they need to find their new homes,” SDHS CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman shared in a statement.

This is not the first time SDHS provided support for the Stockton shelter. SDHS took in 29 at-risk kittens from the Stockton Animal Shelter last December. Many of these cats also had upper respiratory infections and were ringworm positive.
SDHS shelter medicine teams plan to provide isolation and intensive care for the cats rescued. After both medical and behavioral clearance, the kittens will be ready for adoption.
While SDHS shared they are still “significantly” over capacity, the shelter said they can still provide care and accept these cats.
“Stockton Animal Care deserves credit for putting out the call for help,” Weitzman said. “When a fellow shelter needs support, whether here in San Diego or beyond, we want to be there for them.”
