Each year, the City of Coronado offers free trees to residents through the Arbor Day Tree Program. The tree program is only for plantings on parkways adjacent to residents’ homes. Once a property owner submits the online tree request, City staff will visit and evaluate the parkway site to look for:
Functional irrigation in the parkway for the new tree
Space for a young tree to grow unobstructed
No other trees in the vicinity that would hinder proper canopy growth
Protection from nearby utilities for the tree roots and canopy
Site history to see if previous trees have failed at that location
If the site is approved, property owners are asked to pick their top three tree varieties from an approved street tree list, and the City will then pick the best species for that location. On Arbor Day, which falls on April 4 this year, volunteers will plant a 15 gallon tree, which the City will mulch, double stake. A dedicated irrigation bubbler will also be installed.
