FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Dr. Marianne Ingheim is a cancer survivor.

“In 2016, I was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 41,” said Dr. Marianne Ingheim, the facilitator for the Pages of Hope supportive journaling class. “Then in 2023, I had a recurrence.”

That same year, Dr. Ingheim also completed her radiation treatment in April.

Through the uncertainty, Dr. Ingheim found her voice and regained her narrative through journaling. Out of her journey, Dr. Ingheim’s book Out of Love: Finding Your Way Back to Self-Compassion was born.

“It was a way of, on the one hand, coping with what was happening in the here and now,” said Dr. Ingheim. “But also making meaning of the whole experience and being able to create my own narrative.”

Part of her journey led Marianne to pursue her PhD, which she earned in 2024. Now she wants to help others find their voice through a supportive journaling class called the Pages of Hope.

“Cancer is life-changing, and journaling can be a way to help us make sense of it all,” said Dr. Ingheim.

The six-week class welcomes women at any stage of their cancer journey. The free sessions will be both in-person at cCare off Millbrook Avenue in Northeast Fresno and online.

The goal is to help build meaning, resilience, and self-compassion.

“We get to write freely about our thoughts and feelings and hopes and fears,” said Dr. Ingheim. “Writing down our pain can actually externalize it. That way we’re not as overwhelmed by it.”

Cancer can be a lonely and painful journey. But Dr. Ingheim hopes that through the class, they can build a sisterhood of survivors, giving them the strength and courage to write their pages of hope.

“We are creating a community,” said Dr. Ingheim. “We are creating a sense of common humanity.”
