A suspect carrying a toy gun was arrested by San Diego Community College District police near the San Diego City College campus on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 23.

The arrest came after campus officials issued a shelter-in-place alert through its safety app, LiveSafe, following a report of a suspect on campus with a firearm.

The suspect, later confirmed to not be a City College student by campus officials, was spotted by the B Street bridge. They were later apprehended off campus by Broadway and 11th streets, according to an email sent by John Parker, City College’s vice president of business services.

Parker’s email, sent at 2:59 p.m., said two alerts were sent to the campus community.

The first, according to Parker, came at approximately 2:04 p.m. and advised those on campus to shelter in place following a report of a suspect on campus with a firearm.

Parker then wrote a second alert confirming the suspect had been apprehended, and shelter-in-place and lockdown orders were lifted.

In a video recorded by a City College student and shared with City Times Media, both San Diego Police Department and SDCCD police cruisers were seen rushing west on B Street to join cruisers heading south down Park Boulevard to respond to the apparent threat shortly before the first alert went out.

“We thank our campus community for responding quickly to emergency alerts and following safety protocols,” Parker said in the safety report after the incident. “We also extend our appreciation to the College Police Department and our local law enforcement partners for their swift response to ensure the safety of our campus.”

City Time Media staff confirmed they received notifications through the LiveSafe app. LiveSafe is being phased out next month by the SDCCD and will be replaced by SDCCDsafe.
