Homicide detectives on Thursday arrested a second suspect in connection with a shooting that killed a 21-year-old Sacramento man nearly five months ago in the city’s Meadowview neighborhood.
John Joseph Cruz, 18, of Sacramento was arrested in connection with the October shooting of Matthew Jhameil Anderson, the Sacramento Police Department announced in an updated social media post.
Police said Cruz was booked at the Sacramento County Jail after specialty units, including the department’s SWAT team helped detectives safely take Cruz into custody.
Cruz faces charges of homicide and attempted robbery, jail records show. He was being held without bail. His arraignment hearing in Sacramento Superior Court had not been scheduled as of Thursday afternoon.
Davian John David Sida, 18, of Sacramento was the first suspect arrested in the homicide case. On Oct. 24, Sida was arrested on suspicion of homicide and attempted robbery in connection with Anderson’s death.
Sida, who remains in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail, is scheduled to return next Thursday for further proceedings in his criminal case in Sacramento Superior Court.
The shooting was reported shortly before 9:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in the 2400 block of Meadowview Road, just east of 24th Street.
Police said officers arrived at the scene and found a man, later identified as Anderson, with at least one gunshot wound. Officers attempted lifesaving measures until medics from the Sacramento Fire Department arrived at the scene, police said. Medics pronounced Anderson dead at the scene.
The Police Department has not released any further details about the homicide investigation or the arrests of the two suspects.
