A Sacramento man is facing attempted murder charges in a rolling shooting spree Wednesday that left cars riddled with gunfire, sent a driver to the hospital and briefly closed two Sacramento freeways.
California Highway Patrol and Sacramento police arrested Raymond Victor Calderon, 33, of Sacramento, in the morning shootings, CHP officials said in a statement late Wednesday.
Calderon was being held without bail at Sacramento County Main Jail on felony counts including assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle, discharging a weapon at a motor vehicle, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, along with misdemeanor charges of evading arrest and driving under the influence.
He was scheduled to appear on the charges Friday in Sacramento Superior Court.
“Freeway violence puts innocent lives at risk,” said CHP Valley Division Assistant Chief Ben Moser, in a statement announcing the arrest. “We thank the Sacramento Police Department and the community members who acted quickly and were good witnesses. Their help led to this arrest.”
CHP officers responded to multiple reports of shootings on Sacramento-area freeways Wednesday morning, with drivers reporting their vehicles had been struck by gunfire.
One man was seriously hurt. Sacramento police found him shortly after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Vine Street and Dos Rios Street in the city’s River District. Emergency responders took the man to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not known Thursday.
CHP and Sacramento officers linked the early morning shooting to the freeway shootings and also located a vehicle in downtown Sacramento near Eighth and K streets believed to be connected to the gunfire.
Investigators searched two Sacramento freeways — Interstate 5 and Highway 160 — temporarily stopping traffic while looking for evidence. CHP and Sacramento police ultimately located a vehicle linked to Calderon, Highway Patrol officials said.
Further investigation led officers to two firearms believed to belong to Calderon. The weapons were being tested to determine whether they were used in the shootings.
