A 55-hour lane reduction is planned on westbound Highway 50 in Sacramento this weekend as crews continue work on the Fix50 project.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Drivers traveling through downtown Sacramento should plan for delays this weekend as Caltrans schedules a 55-hour lane reduction along westbound U.S. Highway 50.

According to Caltrans District 3, the lane reductions are part of ongoing construction for the $511.1 million U.S. Highway 50 Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project, also known as the “Fix50” project.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, March 9, crews will perform work on the bridge deck at the 16th Street off-ramp.

The project involves removing and replacing a joint seal assembly across lanes on westbound Highway 50.

During the work, westbound Highway 50 will be reduced to four open lanes, with lanes five and six closed between the Business 80/Capital City Freeway interchange and west of the 16th Street off-ramp.

Several nearby connections will also be temporarily closed for the duration of the work, including:

The westbound Business 80/Capital City Freeway connector to the westbound Highway 50

The westbound 16th Street off-ramp

The auxiliary lane near the off-ramp

The connector from eastbound Highway 50 will remain open, according to Caltrans.

Officials say the closures are necessary due to the location of the work area and nearby merging traffic.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time while traveling through the construction zone. The speed limit in the work area has been reduced to 55 miles per hour, and the California Highway Patrol will be present for enforcement.

The work is part of a broader project to rehabilitate pavement and add 14 lane miles of high-occupancy vehicle lanes between the Highway 50/Interstate 5 interchange and the Highway 50/Watt Avenue interchange.

Caltrans notes construction schedules may change depending on weather, traffic incidents, or equipment availability.
