John Lynch could let Sam Darnold walk in free agency.

The NFL’s free agency period will officially kick off on Wednesday, March 11th. However, the legal tampering window will open upbefore that on Monday, March 9th. This means that all 32 teams are days away from potentially changing the trajectory of their upcoming seasons.

The San Francisco 49ers are a team that could be losing two of its top wide receivers to free agency. So, the opportunity to spend on big-name veteran players likely won’t be passed up. With close to $38 million in cap space, it is now being reported by insider Albert Breer that San Francisco is interested in veteran free-agent wide receiver Alec Pierce.

GettyAfter four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, Alec Pierce could join a new team this offseason.

The potential addition of a player with the capabilities of Pierce would be hard not to excite fans in the Bay Area. Still just 25 years of age, Pierce is just entering his prime in the NFL. After leading the NFL in yards per catch in back-to-back seasons, he has proven how ready he is to be paid.

Last season, the former Cincinnati Bearcat set career-highs in targets (84), receptions (47), receiving yards (1,003), first downs (41), yards per game (66.9), and catch percentage (56.0%). While he might not be a true No. 1 wide receiver that is going to catch 100 or more passes for 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns, he is a necessary role player.

His downfield speed puts stress on opposing defenses and opens up opportunities for his fellow teammates to get open. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has an offense that is built on role players doing different things on each play. That is why Pierce joining the Niners makes plenty of sense, especially at the right price.

Getty49ers GM John Lynch is looking to win his first Super Bowl as an executive.

Doesn’t it feel like the 49ers should have won a Super Bowl by now? Having not won it since the 1994 season, this organization is starving for a Lombardi Trophy. Since the 2017 season, which is when both GM John Lynch and Shanahan were hired by the organization, the Niners have made five playoff appearances, won three division titles, earned four NFC Championship game trips, and made two Super Bowl appearances.

This past season, they won 12 games and made it to the divisional round of the playoffs before losing to the Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks. With notable players such as Fred Warner, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey each approaching their age-30 season or older, this roster is getting just that. Older. Furthermore, the team could lose All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams this offseason.

It is unknown if the team’s Super Bowl window is closing. However, signing a skilful deep threat that can impact the offense in several ways couldn’t hurt this franchise. If there is mutual interest when the legal tampering period begins on Monday, the 49ers need to think very hard about what a player like Pierce could do for them at wide receiver.
