The Grand Marshal is Dick Metz. A pioneer in the sport of surfing and founder of the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center, this year’s Grand Marshal, Dick Metz, has surfed around the world yet preserves his lifelong ties to Laguna Beach and continues to support its unique culture. His tales of surfing adventures in Mexico and Central America, the South Pacific, Australia and South Africa inspired the classic surf film “Endless Summer.”
The honored patriot is Commander John C. Connolly, U.S. Navy (Retired). This honor is awarded to those who have served our nation gallantly or meritoriously in times of war or national emergency. As a naval aviator flying helicopters during the Vietnam war, John Connolly rescued airmen shot down in the perilous skies then went on to lead hundreds of missions as an attack helicopter pilot, earning two Navy Commendation Medals, 16 Air Medals, and the Vietnam Air Cross of Gallantry. Connolly served for another 20 years in the naval reserve, married and raised a family, established a local law practice, and has been active in the Laguna Beach community through the American Legion and service on the board of the Pageant of the Masters.
