BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) Strong winds expected this weekend across parts of Kern County could make driving dangerous, especially in the county’s desert communities, where gusty conditions are common.
Eyewitness News Meteorologist Ilya Neyman said the strongest winds are expected in the desert areas as a weather system moves in from the east.
“We’re watching for a windy weekend in Kern County. Right now, it looks like the strongest winds will be over our deserts. And that is because the weather system is coming into our east. That’ll send a flow out of the north, driving down the fourteen. Gusts could be in excess of thirty to maybe forty miles an hour.”

California Highway Patrol Officer Aaron Maurer warned that high-profile vehicles face the greatest risk in strong winds.
“The high-profile vehicles do have trouble. Whether you’re driving a big rig tractor-trailer or hauling a fifth-wheeler travel trailer, it can cause a lot of problems.”
Wind gusts can be powerful enough to topple high-profile vehicles.

Maurer said CHP officers will be out monitoring conditions and may take action if winds become hazardous, including closing on- and off-ramps or adjusting how high-profile vehicles travel.
“And we’ll be working hand in hand with Caltrans through scenarios like that.”
He urged drivers to prepare before heading out, especially during inclement weather, by checking updated conditions online, planning alternate routes, and knowing what resources are available if they get into an accident.

Maurer also recommended specific tools for travelers. “Slow down, leave early. Plan your route accordingly. Know your resources, like the Cal Trans Quick Map. The National Weather Service for here in Hanford does a great job of putting out weather forecasts.”
