The Los Angeles Metro Board has just unanimously approved extending the K Line from Redondo Beach to the Torrance Transit Center, giving the South Bay a real public transit option to connect to the greater L.A. area without having to drive over the congested 405.
This extension uses Metro’s existing rail right-of-way from Redondo, then moves into an elevated guideway above parts of the 405 and down the median of Hawthorne Boulevard before reconnecting with the right-of-way south of 190th Street.
K Line extension project overview
Via L.A. Metro.
The K Line extension to Torrance will add about 4.5 miles of new light rail between the existing Marine Station and the Torrance Transit Center. It will provide direct service connections to LAX and other Metro lines, giving riders from Torrance an estimated 19-minute trip to the LAX/Metro Transit Center once it’s running.
Metro projects the extension will support more than 13,400 daily trips and attract roughly 1.7 million new riders annually, providing a much-needed alternative to highway driving. Construction could begin as early as 2027, with service currently estimated to start around 2036, though timelines can shift as the project advances.
