Looking to work from home in California?
As many California workers return to the office, some state jobs are still offering the option to work from home.
Even though Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered most state employees back to in-person work in 2025, some union agreements allow certain workers to keep teleworking through June.
That means several California state departments — from insurance funds to health care — are still hiring for jobs with remote or hybrid options, according to listings on CalCareers as of Friday, March 6.
State jobs are also known for offering competitive benefits, including access to the nation’s largest public pension system.
Many positions come with specific education or experience requirements, which are linked in the job postings.
Here are some of the latest California state job openings with telework or hybrid options:

Accountant trainee | Permanent, full time

The accountant trainee assists with accounting tasks at Atascadero State Hospital.
This includes processing invoices and preparing reports.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, according to CalCareers.
Attorney III | Permanent, full time
Department: State Compensation Insurance FundLocation: Los Angeles CountySalary: $10,852 to $15,325 per monthApplication due date: Wednesday, March 11
The attorney represents the department in handling workers’ compensation cases.
Duties include providing advice to managers and programs on a wide range of workers’ compensation issues, helping make sure the department is properly defended.

Corporate underwriting manager | Permanent, full time

The corporate underwriting manager leads the Research and Pricing team, setting goals and policies for the division.
This is a remote position. However, candidates must live in California.
The selected hire will need to attend in-person onboarding at an office in Vacaville, with travel expenses covered by the department.
Deputy chief investment officer | Permanent, full time
Department: Public Employees Retirement SystemLocation: Sacramento CountySalary: $28,325 to $47,208 per monthApplication due date: Until the position is filled.
The deputy chief investment officer manages investment strategy for public funds, including global stocks and bonds.
The role involves guiding investment decisions, making sure portfolios remain balanced and helping lead the team to achieve strong performance.
According to CalCareers, this position offers a hybrid work schedule.
Medical transcriber | Permanent, full time
Department: State HospitalsLocation: San Luis Obispo CountySalary: $3,689 to $4,623 per monthApplication due date: Friday, March 20
The medical transcriber types and prepares medical reports for doctors at Atascadero State Hospital.
Duties include listening to recorded dictation from medical staff and turning that into written reports, along with checking and editing for mistakes in the recordings.

Psychiatrist supervisor | Permanent, full time

Receiver’s assistant deputy medical executive | Limited term, full time

The receiver’s assistant deputy medical executive helps make sure health care services in correctional facilities are safe, effective and continuously improving.
The role includes overseeing physicians and other licensed medical staff involved in quality and patient safety programs, while also providing guidance, support and training.

Senior head of investment data and analytics | Permanent, full time

This position oversees investment data and performance analytics.
While working closely with senior staff, executives and other partners, they use data and analytics information to improve portfolio management.
This role offers a hybrid mix of in-office and remote work.
Senior quality engineer | Permanent, full time
Department: High Speed Rail AuthorityLocation: Fresno CountySalary: $11,437 to $14,315 per monthApplication due date: Monday, March 23
The senior quality engineer works to inspect and oversee construction for the department.
The engineer makes sure contractors follow plans and quality standards for roads, bridges and traffic signs.
Some part-time remote work is possible for California residents, according to CalCareers.
Storage and backup team manager | Permanent, full time

The storage and backup team manager leads a team that keeps the department’s computer storage, backups and cloud systems running smoothly.
