Weather update

Sacramento is experiencing a rare occurrence for early March: 70-plus degrees all week, with daytime temperatures that could flirt with 80 degrees before next weekend.

The National Weather Service said the upcoming weather will be about 10 to 15 degrees above normal temperatures for this time of year. The average high for Sacramento around this part of March is around 63 to 67 degrees, with lowering precipitation chances as later March and early April comes around.

Here is the daily max temperature forecast from the weather service:

Sunday: 77 degreesMonday: 76 degreesTuesday: 71 degreesWednesday: 75 degreesThursday: 77 degreesFriday: 79 degrees

Jeffery Wood, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Sacramento office, said the week will bring mostly clear skies and abundant sunshine with a dry, north wind across the area.

“These conditions are due to a large upper-level high-pressure system over the area. High pressure allows for warmer air to sink or stay near the surface, which in turn warms our temperatures,” he said.

Wood said it is important to remember that while the temperatures are warming, local area waterways remain cold and are therefore dangerous.

“If any resident is heading to the water, we want to remind them that you should always wear a life vest, even experienced swimmers can quickly lose muscle control, and cold water can kill,” he said.

The warm stretch of weather also coincides with the start of Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, as clocks spring forward and add an hour of daylight in the evenings. The first day of spring is March 20.
