LONG BEACH – The Millikan girls soccer team saw its season end Saturday with a loss to Quartz Hill 1-0 in the CIF Southern California Division III Regional final at DeHaven Stadium.

Rams coach Tino Nunez told his team to remember its historic season after the pain of the loss subsides.

“This really hurts,” Nunez said. “But you guys made history. You are always going to have this. Whenever we get a chance to reflect on this year and this moment, you’ll see how much you actually accomplished.”

After defeating Ayala twice in less than a week and Tulare Western 7-0, the Rams did not have enough gas in the tank for a fourth win in just over seven days.

Millikan keeper Samantha Ortiz stopped three of the four shots she faced Saturday.

Millikan (21-5-1) put six shots on Quartz Hill’s Leilani Glover, who stopped all of them.

With the win, Quartz Hill secured the regional title and earn a chance to play in the CIF State Division III championship game in Sacramento.

Quartz Hill (23-3-2) scored almost immediately against Millikan.

In the game’s first minute, the Royals moved the ball to the top right corner of the 18-yard-box where Amelia Rosales tapped a pass back to Alexia Lear. Lear struck the ball past the outstretched arms of Ortiz and into the side netting of the Millikan goal.

Nunez attributed the early goal to fatigue and a lack of focus after a grueling week.

“We had a slow start the last game as well,” Nunez said “I think it’s just one of those ‘here we go again’ (situations). You try to liven it up in the warmup, but it just seemed slow and quiet. Last game we dodged a couple; this time they put one away early and you’re trying to get yourself out of it.

“A little of it could be fatigue, a little of it could be just not mentally focused right away.”

Millikan’s best chance of the first half came off the foot of Caoimhe Tighe, who stole the ball from a Quartz Hill defender a few yards from goal, but could not volley the ball on net from close range.

Another Millikan opportunity came in the 28th minute when the Rams swarmed a loose ball in the Quartz Hill 18-yard-box, but a Millikan player collided with Glover causing the play to be blown dead.

Millikan nearly tied the score in the 53rd minute when Jayla Cortes found Alexandra Rios, who stopped on a dime in front of the Quartz Hill goal to shake a defender, but could not beat Glover for the game-tying goal.

The Rams played with desperation in the game’s final 15 minutes, launching three of their six shots in that time.
