The Anaheim Union High School District has launched a program to provide free laundry services to students and their families, aiming to remove basic barriers that can affect students’ success in school.

The district’s school board recently approved a partnership with LaundryUp that will provide vouchers students can redeem at two Superior Laundry locations in Anaheim, according to reporting by The Orange County Register.

District officials say educators and staff will identify students who need the service and refer them to the program, with priority given to students experiencing homelessness and those in foster care programs.

“We believe that protecting a student’s dignity is essential to their success; it is difficult for a young person to focus on education if they are worried about basic necessities like clean clothes,” Kenny Perez, the district’s community schools manager, told the Register.

Under the program, vouchers can be exchanged for a laundry card preloaded with $8 in credit, enough for two wash cycles and three 10-minute drying cycles, and will also include detergent and fabric softener.

The services will be available at Superior Laundry locations at 1070 N. State College Blvd. and 851 S. Harbor Blvd., the newspaper reported.

The district has designated up to $8,900 in funding for the effort, which will run through Dec. 31, though officials say it could be extended depending on student needs.

Patrick Lee, who owns the laundromats and the LaundryUp service, said the effort is meant to support the community.

“To be able to get involved, it’s been a blessing,” Lee told the Register.

The program was inspired by a similar initiative in the Anaheim Elementary School District, which also offers laundry support to students and families.
