How Much Money Will Oakland County Communities be Getting from Marijuana Tax
(Kurt Metzger, March 8, 2026)
Oakland County, MI – It is time again for the Michigan Department of Treasury to distribute the tax revenue collected from marijuana sales to municipalities and counties that allow recreational marijuana dispensaries. The dollars distributed will be less than last year ($54,000 vs $58,000 per dispensary) due to a decline in sales for the first time since legal recreational marijuana sales started in December 2019.
A total of 114 cities, 39 villages, 81 townships, 75 counties and four tribes will receive payments from the Marijuana Regulation Fund, according to Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency. They will get $54,017.10 per retail store or microbusiness, based on nearly $94 million collected.
Michigan voters approved the legalization of the recreational use of Marihuana for adults 21 years of age and older. (State law spells it with an “h”). The resulting legislation known as the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA) imposes an excise tax of 10% on retail Marihuana sales in addition to a 6% sales tax. Michigan has implemented a new 24% wholesale tax on adult-use cannabis, which went into effect on January 1, 2026. This tax is in addition to the existing 10% retail excise tax and 6% sales tax.
In 2025, Oakland County had 49 marijuana businesses across the14 communities, down from 50, in the same communities, in 2024. Oxford village lost three businesses since 2024, while Hazel Park and Madison Heights added one each. Hazel Park leads the other thirteen with 11 marijuana establishments, bringing in just under $600,000. In addition to each community receiving their share, Oakland County will receive a separate payment of $2,646,838, down from 2024’s $2,911,433. In FY23, 12 communities accounted for 37 establishments and the county payment was $2,127,109.
