A 50-year-old driver is accused of intentionally ramming a vehicle into his 89-year-old father, killing the elderly man, on Saturday, March 7 in Long Beach.
Officers shortly before 2 p.m. responded to reports of a family disturbance in the 600 block of West Wardlow Avenue, according to a Long Beach Police Department statement.
The officers arrived to find the 89-year-old man pinned underneath a vehicle in front of a residence.
Neighborhood residences provided officers with a floor jack, which they used to life the vehicle high enough to extricate the elderly man, police said. The man, who police have identified as William Porter of Long Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, identified by police as Robert Porter of Long Beach, remained at the scene, police said, and was taken into custody.
Based on their preliminary investigation, homicide detectives believe that Robert Porter, the son, intentionally drove into William Porter, his father. Exactly what sparked the confrontation between son and father was not immediately clear. Police did not specify the type of vehicle.
Robert Porter was booked on suspicion of murder.
