A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after police say he intentionally struck and killed his 89-year-old father with a vehicle during a family disturbance in Long Beach.

Officers with the Long Beach Police Department responded around 1:53 p.m. Saturday to the 600 block of West Wardlow Avenue following reports of a family disturbance involving an elderly man and his adult son.

When officers arrived, they found the elderly man pinned underneath a vehicle in front of a residence, according to police.

Officers and nearby residents worked together to try to rescue the victim. Residents provided a floor jack, which officers used to lift the vehicle high enough to pull the man out until firefighters with the Long Beach Fire Department arrived.

Paramedics rendered aid, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The victim was identified as William Porter, 89, of Long Beach.

According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of the vehicle intentionally struck the elderly man, authorities said.

The suspect, identified as Robert Porter, 50, also of Long Beach, remained at the scene and was later taken into custody.

He was booked on suspicion of murder, and bail was set at $2 million, according to police.

Long Beach homicide detectives continue to investigate the incident.
