Northern California forecast: A dry and unseasonably warm week ahead

The region is enjoying some early spring weather after our stretch of breezy weather has relaxed.

WARM IT’S GOING TO BE OUT THERE. YES, WARM AND DRY. AND THAT STARTED TODAY. WASN’T TODAY JUST THE TYPE OF WEATHER THAT YOU WANTED TO WAKE UP FOR? NO MATTER HOW TIRED YOU WERE FROM LOSING THAT HOUR OF SLEEP LAST NIGHT, IT WAS JUST GORGEOUS AND SPECTACULAR TO LOOK OUT FROM OUR CAMERAS AND STILL SEE BRIGHT SKIES. BECAUSE OF THE TIME CHANGE, THE SUN WON’T BE SETTING THIS EVENING UNTIL 706. NOW THE SUN WILL SET LATER AND LATER EVERY EVENING FROM NOW ON THROUGH THE START OF SPRING, WHICH OFFICIALLY IS MARCH 20TH, AND THEN THROUGH THE START OF SUMMER AS WELL, WHICH OFFICIALLY IS JUNE 24TH. ON THAT DAY, THE SUN WILL BE SETTING CLOSER TO 830 IN THE EVENING. VERY COMFORTABLE. STILL ONLY MAKES SENSE THAT IT’S WARMER AT THIS TIME TODAY THAN IT WAS YESTERDAY. LOW 70S IN THE SACRAMENTO AND SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, THE FOOTHILLS COMING IN THE UPPER 60S, THE SIERRA STILL HOLDING ON TO TEMPERATURES IN THE 60S, LITTLE BREEZE IN THE MOUNTAINS. WE ALSO HAVE A BREEZE AT THE BEACH, BUT IN THE VALLEY THE WINDS ARE BELOW FIVE MILES PER HOUR, MUCH QUIETER DAY THAN THE LAST FEW, AND WE’RE GOING TO HOLD ON TO THAT FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. TEMPERATURES TONIGHT DROPPING INTO THE 60S AFTER DINNER TIME. WE’RE DOWN INTO THE 50S AFTER MIDNIGHT. LOWS WILL BE IN THE UPPER 40S, SO IT WILL BE A CHILLY START TO YOUR MONDAY. HOWEVER, TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO WARM TO VERY COMFORTABLE VALUES IN THE AFTERNOON. LOOKING FOR HIGHS NEAR 73 DEGREES FOR YOUR MONDAY IN THE VALLEY UNDER A FEW AFTERNOON CLOUDS, AND THOSE WINDS ARE GOING TO REMAIN LIGHT OUT OF THE NORTHWEST. SO JUST A TOUCH COOLER ACROSS THE REGION. THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY HIGHS WILL BE IN THE MID TO THE LOW TO MID 70S, DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE. YUBA CITY WILL BE THE WARM SPOT WITH FORECAST HIGHS NEAR 75 DEGREES. A LITTLE BIT WARMER IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY WITH HIGHS AROUND 76 IN STOCKTON, MANTECA AND TRACY. COMFORTABLE DAY IN THE DELTA IN THE BAY AREA. SAN FRANCISCO BACK INTO THE 60S AFTER 70 TODAY 74 IN NAPA, 67. IN LAKEPORT. WE HAVE MID 70S IN CONCORD AND SAN JOSE. AND A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE FOOTHILLS TOMORROW, WITH TEMPERATURES TOPPING OUT IN THE UPPER 60S AND LOW 70S. AND I’M SURE MANY IN THE SIERRA THOUGHT TODAY WAS A LITTLE WARM. WELL, A LITTLE BIT COOLER TOMORROW WITH HIGHS IN THE UPPER 50S AND LOW 60S IN TRUCKEE AND SOUTH LAKE TAHOE. HIGH PRESSURE DID NOSE IN YESTERDAY AND TODAY THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WARMER WEATHER. HOWEVER THAT LOW IN BAJA STILL STUCK THERE AND THAT’S KIND OF PUSHING OUR LOW BACK OFF TO THE WEST. HOWEVER, RIGHT AFTER THAT LOW TAKES OFF, HIGH PRESSURE MOVES BACK IN FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE WEEK, AND THIS TIME IT’S GOING TO BRING TEMPERATURES BACK INTO THE MID 70S. WEDNESDAY, UPPER 70S. WE’RE GOING TO BE APPROACHING 80 DEGREES BY THE END OF THE WEEK. AND THAT WILL BE RIGHT UP AGAINST THOSE RECORD HIGHS. SO WE WILL BE ON RECORD WATCH BY THE END OF THE WEEK. IN THE FOOTHILLS, THAT MEANS TEMPERATURES WILL BE CLIMBING INTO THE MID TO UPPER 70S AS WELL. BY THE WEEKEND, THE SIERRA GORGEOUS NEXT WEEK AS TEMPERATURES EVEN WARMER THAN THIS WEEKEND. AND EVERYTHING ABOUT THE SEVEN-DAY FORECAST JUST SCREAMS SPRING WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE 70S ALMOST 80 DEGREES AT THE END, SUNNY SKIES AND WHAT YOU DON’T SEE ON THERE, OF COURSE, IS THE POLLEN.

As the jet stream dips south for the start of the week, expect subtly cooler temperatures and a few clouds. Highs will still be warmer than the normal of 65 degrees.

Forecast highs

An area of high pressure in the Eastern Pacific will move onshore again by the end of the week, and forecast highs will soar into the upper 70s, at times flirting with daily record highs.

No rain is in the forecast, but fortunately our few, very wet rains have made up a decent water year. Sacramento has currently received 90% of normal rainfall, with Stockton and Modesto both at more than 100%.

Dry weather is now expected through at least the middle of the month, and the Climate Prediction Center suggests that weather going into the second half will also be drier and warmer than normal.

Foothills & Sierra 7-day forecast

Temperatures in the foothills will soar into the mid and upper 70s next weekend, with Sierra highs in the mid 60s.

Valley 7-day forecast
