SCVNews.com | Canyons Finishes Road Trip with 6-3 Win at Bakersfield

College of the Canyons women’s tennis played to a 6-3 road win at Bakersfield College on March 5, as the Cougars were able to get back on track with balanced victories in both doubles and singles play.

Canyons (6-4, 5-3) benefited from a pair of forfeited points by Bakersfield (2-6, 1-6) to seize the victory.

COC freshman Emma Chodur, the current Jersey Mike’s women’s student-athlete of the week, won a 10th straight singles match from the No. 1 position. Meanwhile, sophomore Lauren Neal posted a fourth straight singles victory from the No. 4 spot.

The Cougars also earned a point in No. 6 singles play with Bakersfield failing to enter a competitor.

Canyons claimed the first two points of the day with doubles victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

Chodur and Baylee Renfro were 8-4 winners to improve the duo’s record to 7-3 on the year. Thursday’s win was the seventh straight for the No. 1 pairing.

Breana Lemos teamed with Neal in the No. 2 spot to also earn a doubles point, taking the match 8-5. Lemos/Neal are now 1-1 when paired for doubles play.

Bakersfield did not enter a No. 3 doubles team. The Renegades have dropped four consecutive matches.

The Cougars end the three-match road stand with a 2-1 record after falling at. L.A. Mission College earlier in the week. COC had previously defeated Ventura College on Feb. 26.

Canyons is currently third in the Western State Conference standings with six conference matches remaining. L.A. Mission (14-0, 8-0) hold the top spot with Santa Barbara City College (8-1, 5-1) in second.

The Cougars next host conference opponent Antelope Valley College (1-12, 0-7) at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 10.
