San Diego State golfer Harry Takis and jumper Xiamara Young are both in the national spotlight this week.

Takis, a sophomore from Australia, is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the latest Scoreboard computer ratings. Takis is averaging 69.33 strokes per round across four tournaments this season, which includes an individual title and two second-place finishes.

Meanwhile, Young will be competing in both the long jump and triple jump this weekend at the NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships at Fayetteville, Ark. She won the Mountain West title in both events two weeks ago, going 21 feet, 3.9 inches in the long jump and 44-2.7 in the triple jump.

NCAAs for PLNU

Both the Point Loma Nazarene men’s and women’s basketball teams will be playing in the NCAA Division II West Regionals this week.

The PacWest Conference Tournament champions, PLNU’s men are a No. 3 seed; they’ll face No. 6 seed Northwest Nazarene on Friday in Hayward.

PLNU’s women made the field as an at-large team. The seventh-seeded Sea Lions will meet No. 2 seed Western Washington on Friday in Ellensburg, Wash.

PLNU, CSUSM streaking in baseball

Division II powers Point Loma Nazarene (18-3) and Cal State San Marcos (13-2) are streaking in baseball.

The Sea Lions are led by starting pitcher Derek Silva; the Mesa College product has a 5-0 record and 0.79 ERA.

CSUSM finished the week with five straight wins. PJ Wendler is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Michael Ryan leads the Cougars with a .395 batting average, while Grossmont College product Jacob Embleton is hitting .386.

More honors for Aztecs pitcher

San Diego State’s Aidan Russell was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for the second straight time. The senior pitcher threw 6 1/3 combined scoreless innings against Saint Mary’s and Washington. Russell is 2-0 on the season with two saves, 20 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings and a 0.63 ERA.

Aztecs junior Jabin Trosky has been added to the national watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award, which goes to the best shortstop in college baseball. Trosky leads the Aztecs with a .385 batting average and.929 OPS.

SDSU superlatives

Faith Jordan (6-2, 3.09 ERA) pitched the fifth no-hitter in San Diego State softball history last week against Long Beach State. The Aztecs are 14-10 heading into Wednesday’s nonconference finale against Cal Baptist.

• San Diego State has won seven straight women’s tennis matches, including a 4-3 victory over 19th-ranked USD. The Aztecs (8-1) are led by Jo-Yee Chen, who was named the Mountain West Player of the Week; and Vessa Turley, the league’s reigning freshman of the week.

• Senior swimmers Moa Bergdahl (100 and 200 breaststroke) and Abby Storm (100 and 200 backstroke) have already qualified for this month’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

• Isabella Gomez will lead five Aztecs divers trying to qualify the NCAA Championships at the Zone E Finals through Wednesday at Flagstaff, Ariz. Gomez, Belen Cano and Alina Skrocki will be participating in all three events — platform, 1-meter springboard and 3-meter springboard.

• Sydney Gish scored five goals as San Diego State’s 19th-ranked women’s water polo team defeated Pacific 19-6.

San Marcos, Palomar strong in softball

Jordan Hill pitched a no-hitter Friday as Division II Cal State San Marcos extended its winning streak to 20 straight games with a four-game sweep of Stanislaus State. Hill struck out six and issued one walk for the Cougars (22-1). She was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week.

Palomar College, meanwhile, improved to 16-1 in junior college play. Poway High School grad Alexis Huey leads the Comets with a .600 batting average and has belted 10 home runs; La Costa Canyon High School grad Kiara Flaviani leads the team in the circle, posting a 14-1 record and 2.10 ERA.
