SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Fifteen Democratic Assembly members are urging the California Air Resources Board to reconsider parts of a proposed update to the state’s cap and invest program, which could increase gas prices.

The board is set to vote in May on the proposal, which the oil industry claims would add billions in costs and raise gas prices by more than a dollar.

On Monday, the lawmakers signed a letter urging the board to reconsider parts of the proposed update, specifically those impacting gas and electricity.

They expressed their concerns in the letter, stating, “This crisis is not a fallacy nor a thinly veiled threat. It is a reality borne by consumers today, who are historically and empirically least able to afford it.”

The letter further emphasized, “California’s climate leadership cannot come at the cost of destabilizing our energy markets and burdening those least able to bear it.”

All 15 Democrats who signed the letter had approved legislation six months ago directing the California Air Resources Board to take the action.

It’s probably worth pointing out that all of these Democrats voted for the cap & invest re-up in September, which directed CARB to essentially do what it’s doing: pic.twitter.com/nxCTXCkxdJ
