FRESNO, Calif. — A Fresno High School student died Monday after collapsing during a physical education class, according to a spokesperson for Fresno Unified School District.

District officials said first responders were called to the campus around lunchtime after the student collapsed.

The student was taken to a hospital, where they later died.

Students on campus said they were stunned by the emergency and devastated to learn their classmate did not survive.

One student described seeing emergency crews arrive shortly after the medical call was made.

“I am going to think about it a lot ’cause it could happen to anyone else,” said Giovanni, a Fresno High junior.

It remains unclear what the student was doing at the time of the collapse.

One classmate said they believed it may have occurred during a P.E. drill or test, but Fresno Unified has not confirmed that detail.

In a statement, the district said, “Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and school community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Neighbors also expressed shock at the news and said their hearts went out to the family grieving the loss of their child.

No additional information has been released by the district.
