A dog owner is mourning the loss of his beloved mini-Doberman Mitzi after the 15-year-old canine was found dead following the rescue of her master, who was injured while hiking above Sierra Madre.

The two were hiking on the Mt. Wilson Trail when the 67-year-old man broke his ankle while trying to get Mitzi back onto the trail after she wandered during the hike, according to Sierra Madre Search and Rescue, which found the man in a drainage ditch.

Rescuers saved the man about 3 p.m. Sunday, but the dog could not be found and an outpouring of public concern followed.

On Monday, the search and rescue team posted online that Mitzi had been found dead.

“While we were hoping for a more positive outcome, we are grateful for the public’s interest and help in finding her,” the team posted online.
