SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco is considering a major step to help and try to control the dog population.

This Thursday, a public safety committee will debate a proposed ordinance that will require every dog in San Francisco to be spayed or neutered.

Currently, only pitbulls are required to be sterilized.

People who don’t get their pet spayed or neutered could face fines, and have their dog taken away from them.

Dog owners can file exemptions to avoid sterilizing their dogs that would be reviewed by the public safety committee.
