SACRAMENTO — Sacramento State’s varsity eight has been named the West Coast Conference Crew of the Week after the boat’s performance at the season-opening Sacramento State Invitational on Lake Natoma.

Racing with winds zipping between 9-12 miles per hour and a flow rate of 1,500 cfs, Sacramento State’s top boat finished ahead of three WCC schools.

The Hornets posted a 2,000-meter winning time of 6:55.3. That finish was five seconds faster than Saint Mary’s second place time of 7:00.3. The Hornets also finished comfortably ahead of Portland (7:08.5) and Santa Clara (7:22.3) in the four-boat field.

The team’s boat consisted of six seniors, two juniors and a sophomore.

The Hornets have now earned the weekly honor three times since joining the WCC a year ago.

Sacramento State returns to the water this Saturday when it hosts the Hornet Invitational on Lake Natoma.
