
Two people died and another person suffered major injuries after two vehicles crashed in a head-on collision late Monday on Interstate 5 in Yolo County, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The incident was first reported shortly before midnight on I-5 a few miles south of the town of Dunnigan. One of the two vehicles was reportedly heading the wrong way in the southbound lanes of I-5 just south of County Road 8, the CHP’s Woodland office announced in a news release.
The CHP said a driver with no passengers was heading north in a Honda vehicle in the southbound lanes. A driver and a passenger were in a Toyota were heading south on I-5.
The CHP said the crash occurred when the Honda crashed head-on with the Toyota.
The Honda’s driver and the passenger in the Toyota died from their injuries in the crash, the CHP said. The Toyota’s driver suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The CHP did not release any further details about the three people in the late night crash but said investigators believe alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the fatal crash.
The Yolo County Coroner’s Office will release the names and ages of the two people who died after their families have been notified.
