FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — On Monday, a Fresno High School student collapsed during gym class.
The school nurse and school resource officer both provided aid until an ambulance arrived and took him to the hospital.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says the student has been identified as 14-year-old Daniel Padilla Jr., of Fresno.
The Fresno Unified School District says Padilla passed away at the hospital.
FUSD released the following message on Tuesday:
Our hearts continue to ache in solidarity with the family of our student. We can only imagine the pain his unexpected passing is causing them. We are honoring and respecting our student and his family by giving them the time and space they need to grieve.We recognize that the loss of our student has impacted our Fresno High community. We have a team of mental health professionals at Fresno High School providing social-emotional support to students who may be affected or triggered by this tragedy.Additionally, resources are available for Fresno High staff so they can receive social-emotional support during this difficult time. We have also designated substitute staff who are ready to support any staff member who may need assistance.We appreciate your support in respecting our student’s family’s privacy during this time.
The district is providing a variety of counseling services to both students and staff.
