Bi-Rite is planning its first location on the west side

  • March 11, 2026

One of San Francisco’s most popular — and pricey — grocery stores is planning another location.

Bi-Rite, the upscale market with three locations across the city, has signed a lease on a building at 6001 California St. in the Outer Richmond. The building has 3,481 square feet of retail space, according to marketing materials (opens in new tab).

The expansion comes less than two years after Bi-Rite opened a 4,000-square-foot location, its largest, on Polk Street. That followed the second location on Divisadero more than a decade prior. At the time, founding partner Sam Mogannam teased plans to roll out additional Bi-Rite stores before 2030, including “two to three more markets in the Bay Area.”

The location on the corner of California and 22nd Avenue previously housed 6001 California Market, which closed two years ago. Neighborhood residents are likely familiar with the storefront’s red-and-white Appel & Dietrich Fine Food Market neon sign, a relic from the first grocery to occupy the space, in the 1950s. The building shares a block with popular restaurants Pearl 6101 and Pizzetta 211.

Bi-Rite, known for stocking local products and produce, is one of several San Francisco-based grocers expanding in the city. Though 2025 saw the closure of major supermarkets, including the city’s largest Whole Foods and Safeway in the Fillmore, homegrown Bi-Rite, Luke’s Local, and Gus’s Community Market have added stores in the past three years.

Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market, a popular natural and organic chain, plans to open its first San Francisco location in SoMa, though not for several years.

Bi-Rite did not provide a timeline for the opening in the Outer Richmond.
