Health officials issued a new advisory after two cases of mumps were reported at Berkeley High School.

Leaders have not announced if the patients are students or faculty, but they do say it’s likely the second person got it from the first patient.

California mandates that children receive two doses of the mumps vaccination before entering kindergarten; however, experts caution that receiving the vaccine does not guarantee immunity against the disease.

“Even if you get two doses, [you] might be infected and not know it,” Dr. Yvonne Maldonado said.

Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, Stanford professor of pediatrics and epidemiology, joins Raj Mathai to discuss a health advisory issued after mumps cases reported in Berkeley.

Mumps is highly contagious, and symptoms include swollen glands, painful jaw swelling, fever, tiredness, loss of appetite and headache.

Mumps also has a long incubation period.

Health leaders are asking families to be on the lookout for any symptoms through March 17.
