FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A massive Navy plane was spotted circling over Fresno Tuesday night, just days after an unmarked Boeing plane was seen, leaving many wondering what it was doing in the area.

Many residents say they heard it before they saw it.

The aircraft, a Boeing P-8 Poseidon, flew over the city for about 30 minutes before heading back north.

The P-8 is a specialized maritime patrol plane used for anti-submarine warfare, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and search-and-rescue missions.

Witnesses described the plane as big, loud, and flying unusually low, performing what appeared to be touch-and-go landings at Fresno Yosemite International Airport.

It carried few visible markings, which is typical for military training or operational flights.

The P-8 Poseidon is based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington and regularly conducts training exercises along the West Coast.

The sighting comes just three days after an unmarked Boeing E-6B Mercury, often referred to as a “Doomsday Plane,” was also spotted in the area.
