California Governor Gavin Newsom said there is no “imminent threat” after an FBI alert warning that Iran was allegedly planning attacks on California surfaced.
The confidential alert, which was issued by the FBI in early February, said that Iran “allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles…specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the U.S. conducted strikes against Iran,” according to Reuters.
Newsom’s press office said that California was “actively monitoring reports of potential threats tied to the Middle East conflict” and has increased security measures.
FBI Warns California of Possible Iran Attack
The February alert, which was issued through the multi-agency Los Angeles Joint Regional Intelligence Center, was made public on Wednesday.
It said: “We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the U.S. conducted strikes against Iran. We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack.”
Gavin Newsom: No ‘Imminent Threat’ From Iran
Newsom said in a post on social media that his office is “not aware of any imminent threats at this time.”
“I am in constant coordination with security and intelligence officials, including with California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, to monitor potential threats to California—including those tied to the conflict in the Middle East,” he said. “We remain prepared for any emergency in our state.”
Similarly, his press office account on X said that “California is actively monitoring reports of potential threats tied to the Middle East conflict.”
It added that Newsom had also directed “the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to elevate its security posture.”
Newsom “has been coordinating with state, local and federal partners since the start of the conflict to share information around-the-clock,” the post said. “California is prepared to protect our communities.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ office said she was “coordinating closely with state and federal partners” but added that “there is no specific or credible threat to Los Angeles.”
When U.S. President Donald Trump was asked about the memo on Wednesday, he told reporters “it’s being investigated.”
“But you have a lot of things happening, and all we could do is take them as they come,” he said, CNN reports.
Donald Trump ‘Not Worried’ About Iran Attack on US Soil
Trump was asked on Wednesday whether he was worried Iran would start to include American targets as part of its retaliation and he answered: “No I’m not.”
But on February 28, when America and Israel launched military strikes on Tehran, killing former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Trump said in an address on Truth Social that Iran was developing long range missiles that “could soon reach the American homeland.”
Similarly, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters at the time: “You’ve seen them increasing the range of the missiles they have now, and clearly they are headed in the pathway to one day being able to develop weapons that could reach the continental U.S.”
Last August Amir Hayat-Moqaddam warned that Tehran has been developing long-range strike capabilities for two decades and said: “Perhaps our next missile will hit Washington directly.”
“Even now, all European countries are in our range. With our existing missiles we can strike France, Germany, the U.K., and all of Western and Eastern Europe,” he told Iranian media at the time.
A 2025 U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency assessment that found Iran could take up to 2035 to develop a “militarily viable intercontinental ballistic missile.”
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said at the time: “President Trump is absolutely right to highlight the grave concern posed by Iran, a country that chants ‘death to America,’ possessing intercontinental ballistic missiles.”

This is a developing story. More to follow.
