St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and several businesses across Long Beach are gearing up for the celebrations.
The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association will host an ‘Almost St. Patrick’s Day’ pub crawl on Sunday, March 15, featuring a go-at-your-own-pace trek to various restaurants and breweries in the neighborhood.
Participating businesses will have discounted drinks and specials, including Beachwood Brewing & Distilling, Ambitious Ale’s, Lola’s Mexican Cuisine, Rasselbock, Wood & Salt, Sala Coffee & Wine, and more.
There will also be free shuttles to take attendees to the various event locations throughout Bixby Knolls. Aside from the pub crawl, the event will also feature live music, entertainment, and “other fun surprises,” according to the organizers.
General admission is free, and RSVPs can be made online at shorturl.at/Rf9i3.
On St. Patrick’s Day proper, Tuesday, March 17, there will be another pub crawl stopping at some of Long Beach’s beloved bars.
That adventure will begin at Altar Society Brewing and Coffee Co., where attendees will pick up their wristbands to secure their access to all the spots — and all the specials and discounts — included with the pub crawl.
The event will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day. For additional information and tickets, go to shorturl.at/fTCNl.
Trademark Brewing will also be hosting a special St. Patrick’s Day event — dubbed the Belfast Beach Brawl. This event, presented by DreamSlam Wrestling, will feature live Lucha Libre Wrestling from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Tickets to that show start at $20, and parking will be free. For tickets, go to shorturl.at/msk0k.
Let them eat Pi
Another holiday coming up is Pi Day, the celebration of the mathematical constant pi — whose first three digits are 3.14 — celebrated on March 14 each year.
Celebrations often include eating pies, baking, or enjoying circular foods as a pun on the word “pi.”
Here in Long Beach, we have plenty of options to celebrate this holiday, including lots of traditional pizza places that sell both sweet and savory pies. Here are a few of my favorites.
A couple of newer restaurants, including Anna’s Joint at 5315 E. 2nd St. and Mooney’s have great pie; while classic Long Beach pizza spots include Speak Cheesy and Domenico’s.
When it comes to sweet pies, I’d say the top Long Beach locations include Jongewaard’s Bake n’ Broil, Polly’s Pies, and Hof’s Hut in the Los Altos area.
I, though, prefer a savory pie. Here are some amazing local options:
A PCH, at 2ND & PCH, serves an amazing upside down pot pie. It’s only available on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The Social List’s in Retro Row serves a pot pie with a wonderfully light and airy crust.
The Ordinaire in downtown serves chicken pot pie bites that are almost finger food.
Calli Chilli at 4111 N. Viking Way serves a butter chicken pot pie that falls into the International comfort food category.
Watch Me! Sports Bar
This Saturday, the popular Watch Me! Sports Bar located in The Marketplace on Pacific Coast Highway will be hosting a queer line dancing event and Pi Day celebration.
The event will feature a happy hour from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with food (including their famous fried pickles) and drink specials for the line dancers, according to a Watch Me! social media post. Then from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., the bar will host line dancing lessons for newbies, and advanced dancers will be invited to the floor from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Aside from the line dancing, the bar will also be serving pie by the slice to help fundraise for
They will be serving up pie by the slice to raise funds for Trans Defense Fund Los Angeles, a mutual aid organization that supports trans people across L.A.county with safety kits, self-defense training, and other resources.
“We invite you to bake a pie, pick up a Costco pie, or convince a pie-baker in your life to make one for the cause,” the bar wrote online.
Wristbands are required to participate in the dancing, which you can get when you check in with a team member.
