OAKLAND — Two men were shot by a masked gunman Wednesday evening in North Oakland, authorities said.

Both men, one  38 and the other 48, were in stable condition, authorities said.

The shooting, which prompted the activation of a gunshot detection alert system, happened about 6:38 p.m. Wednesday outside in the 5900 block of Market Street.

According to initial police reports, the two men were standing outside when a car pulled up and a man wearing a ski mask got out and began shooting at them. More than 10 shots were fired, authorities said.

The gunman then fled in the vehicle.

The two men got their own transportation to a hospital.

A motive for the shooting is under investigation.  It was not immediately known if the wounded men knew each other or if one or both were the intended targets.  Both live in other parts of the city.

Detailed description of the shooter and the vehicle he was in have not been released.
