Active Shooter Reported at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield – ONGOING UPDATES

West Bloomfield, MI – Police from multiple agencies are on the scene at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield in response to what police are calling an active shooter incident.

The situation unfolded around 12:30pm on Thursday, with reports that a vehicle had driven into the building, and that shots had been fired. The vehicle also caused a fire.

Temple Israel is located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road.  Area schools and houses of worship are sheltering in place, and people are asked to avoid the area.  Michigan State Police shared on X that they are increasing patrols at other places of worship in the district.

In an update to the press, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said that no one was confirmed hurt in the incident.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel released a statement, and shared resources to help prevent hate crimes in the state.

“My heart is with the congregation and community of Temple Israel as law enforcement responds to reports of an active shooter. We are closely monitoring the situation and urge residents to follow the requests of local law enforcement as they work to secure the area and protect lives,” Nessel said.

“Antisemitism has no place in Michigan and cannot be tolerated. In moments like these, it’s more important than ever that we come together, stand with our neighbors, confront hate whenever it appears, and build stronger communities.”

To stop potential hate crimes in Michigan, Michigan State Police has information available online or at mi.gov/StopaPlot on how to report or identify suspicious behavior. In 2019, the Department of Attorney General launched a Hate Crimes & Domestic Terrorism Unit. Learn more online here.

In May Nessel took part in a panel discussion at Temple Israel about hate crime prevention, along with with State Representative Noah Arbit and author Dr. Cynthia Miller-Idriss of PERIL Research, which is the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab.
