Detectives Thursday were investigating whether excessive speed led to the death of a motorcyclist who crashed his bike into a pole in Long Beach.

The fatal collision was reported at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of West Shoreline Drive and Broadway, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

“The preliminary investigation revealed a black 2003 BMW K1200 GT was traveling southbound on West Shoreline Drive and merged onto the Broadway off-ramp when the motorist lost control, went over the concrete barrier, and collided with a pole,” police said.

Long Beach fire Department personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Speed is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash, police said.

The rider’s identity was withheld pending positive identification and notification of loved one.
