ROCHESTER, Mich. – Head coach Brian Nelson and the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Baseball team will head east to face Youngstown State in the first series of the conference schedule March 13-15. Due to ongoing renovations at YSU’s field, the series will be played at Michelle Krill Memorial Field at Pullman Park in Butler, Penn. Due to the change, there is no TV stream or concessions, but admission is free all weekend and fans are allowed to bring in outside food and beverages.

Oakland wrapped up their eight-game SEC stretch, with a 0-3 record at No. 22 Texas A&M last weekend. Oakland fell 6–3 in the opener of Friday’s doubleheader after scoring all three runs in the second inning behind a Carter Hain home run and a two-RBI single from Aidan Schuck, before the Aggies responded with a three-run homer and late insurance runs. Texas A&M secured the second game 10–2 after jumping out to five runs in the first inning, while Sam Patton delivered a solo home run for Oakland. In the series finale, the Aggies completed the sweep with a 12–1 victory, collecting 14 hits and three home runs, while Aidan Schuck and Ben Clark each recorded two hits and Clark drove in Oakland’s lone run in the sixth inning

Fifth-year shortstop Kyle Revere was named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, noted as one of the top-100 shortstops in the country. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.

SCOUTING THE PENGUINS

Youngstown State is looking to snap a six-game losing streak after being swept by Southern Indiana last weekend. The Penguins have been led by strong pitching, highlighted by senior Braden Gebhardt, who owns a 0.00 ERA through more than 20 innings with 32 strikeouts, while senior Jack Messmore has also been a steady starter. Offensively, freshman Alex Jang has been the team’s top hitter with a .375 average and team-high totals in hits and total bases, while Kendal Spencer adds speed on the bases with four stolen bags under second-year head coach Trevor Charpie.

A tight series between Horizon League opponents, Oakland holds a slight upper edge to YSU with a 32-31 all-time record against the Penguins. Last year, Oakland went 1-2 in both series home and away with Youngstown State before taking them down in two Horizon League Tournament contests – notably a 22-18 comeback rout of the Penguins in the elimination round.
