A 67-year-old man was killed Thursday when his motorcycle crashed with a vehicle in San Diego’s Kearny Mesa.

The fatal crash happened around 6 a.m. Thursday, when the rider of a westbound 2016 Triumph motorcycle collided with an eastbound 2025 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 42-year-old man as he was traveling on Balboa Avenue, near the intersection of Viewridge Avenue, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Police said the driver of the truck proceeded through the intersection on a green light while attempting a left turn onto Viewridge. The motorcycle entered the intersection against a red light and collided with the front of the Chevrolet.

The motorcycle rider was taken to a hospital, where he died from severe trauma to the head. The victim’s name has not yet been released. The driver of the truck was not injured, the department reported.

Balboa Avenue was temporarily closed between Interstate 15 and Ruffin Road for at least three hours.

Driving under the influence was not a contributing factor in the collision, police said

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Due to a major injury collision, the 9400 – 9700 block of Balboa Avenue is closed between I-15 and Ruffin Road.

The closure is expected to last 3 hours as the SDPD Traffic Division conducts their investigation.
