SAN JOSE — A hit-and-run driver killed a pedestrian on an Interstate 280 off-ramp late Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision was discovered following a 10:20 p.m. call to the CHP reporting that a man was walking into traffic on southbound I-280 through the 10th Street ramp, the agency said in a Friday news release.

Responding officers went to the site and found an unresponsive man with injuries indicating that he was hit by a car, the CHP said. The man died at the scene; his name was not publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Investigators confirmed that the motorist who hit the man fled the scene, and the CHP is treating the collision as a hit and run.

Additional details were not released Friday. Anyone with information for investigators can contact the CHP San Jose area field office at 408-961-0900.
