While negotiations continue, classrooms across the district remain staffed by substitute teachers.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Hundreds of Twin Rivers Unified School District teachers gathered outside Ridge Point Elementary School for their ongoing strike, which has lasted more than a week.

Teachers have been calling for better pay, smaller class sizes and fully covered family health care.

The demonstration drew hundreds of educators holding signs and chanting “one day longer, one day stronger,” while some drivers passing by honked in support. Some parents and students also stopped by to show support.

Negotiations between the teachers union and the Twin Rivers Unified School District remain stalled, similar to where talks stood when negotiations first began about a year ago.

The strike is part of a coordinated series of strikes happening in California, organized by teachers unions.

According to the district’s latest proposal, teachers would receive full Kaiser Permanente family health care coverage for the current school year and the next. The district is also proposing salary increases of 2.5% this year and 2.21% next year.

The raises would be retroactive to July 1, 2025, meaning eligible employees would receive the full value from the start of the current contract year.

Union leaders, however, are seeking dental and vision coverage in addition to the family health care plan, along with guarantees that coverage would extend beyond the next school year.

The Twin Rivers Unified School District is one of the largest districts in California and serves about 25,000 students, many of whom are now navigating the disruption caused by the strike.

District officials told ABC10 that teachers in the district can earn between about $65,000 and $124,000 a year, depending on experience. Teachers may also receive stipends of about $6,000.

ABC10 reached out to the Twin Rivers Unified School District for an interview, but had not received a response as of Friday afternoon.
