The South Pasadena City Council will hold its next regular meeting on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. inside the Amedee O. “Dick” Richards Jr. Council Chambers at 1424 Mission Street. Community members are encouraged to attend to discuss major city grants, important local policy updates, and new commission appointments.

Major Grant Funding Proposals

The city is pursuing several significant grants to fund local improvements. The council will consider authorizing applications for:

• $6 million from HUD: This funding would support the rehabilitation and modernization of the Crowell Family YMCA on Garfield Avenue.
• $1.7 million from Lowe’s: These funds would upgrade Police and Fire Department facilities, including expanding locker rooms to provide dedicated accommodations for female personnel.
• $1.1 million from MSRC: This grant would expand the city’s municipal electric vehicle charging infrastructure and help acquire an EV ARC solar-powered solution.
• $375,000 from FEMA: These funds would help develop a Wildfire Resilient Urban Forest Management Plan.

Local Policy, Personnel, and Appointments

The council will review draft zoning code amendments regarding Conditional Use Permits (CUPs) and community meeting requirements. Officials will discuss whether the City Council, rather than the Planning Commission, should review and approve CUPs for alcoholic beverage sales and live entertainment.

Additionally, the agenda includes a resolution to add one full-time Film Liaison position and reclassify the Deputy Community Services Director to Customer Solutions Manager.

The council will also consider appointing new Youth Commissioners: Yifang “Batia” Lou (Planning), Inah Lauren Chang (Library), Lorcan Swift (Natural Resources), and Luke Kwak (Public Safety).

Public Safety Technology

Public safety technology is also a major discussion topic. The council will review an updated informational report on the South Pasadena Police Department’s Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system.

This includes reviewing the city’s contracts with Flock Safety and providing direction on future contract options.

Community Recognitions

Before diving into business items, the meeting will feature two special presentations. The council will issue proclamations declaring March 2026 as “American Red Cross Month.”

They will also recognize March 18, 2026, as “Nowruz,” the Persian New Year.
