The City of Long Beach will be informing the community about two upcoming projects designed to enhance the areas around Drake Park and Cesar E. Chavez Park.

The Public Works Department and Parks, Recreation and Marine Department will host two public workshops this month — one in-person and one online.

The first workshop will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center (401 Golden Ave.). A virtual meeting will be held on Monday, Oct. 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom (bit.ly/LBDrakeChavezMeeting).

City staff will provide updates on the current plans to connect Drake Park to Cesar E. Chavez by converting a 4.5-acre former industrial site between the two parks into recreational space. The presentation will also go over previous data the City gathered from community surveys and outreach efforts, which helped guide the plan for these projects adopted by the city council in 2019.

The workshops will also inform the public about the Drake-Chavez Master Planning Project, a broader initiative aimed at further revitalizing the area. While the City has only gathered enough funding to cover planning, engagement and concept design for this project so far, it is working to secure the additional money needed for design and construction.

While the two development projects will enhance the same area, they will be carried out on different timelines.

Interpretation services will be available during both meetings in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog. Residents with other accessibility needs are asked to request any necessary accommodations by Monday, Oct. 13 while registering.

Registration through the City’s website is preferred but not required.
